Mongolia - History and Demographics

Mongolia is well known for Genghis Khan who led the Mongols in the 13th century to conquer a vast area and establish one of the largest land empire in history. Over time, Mongolia came under Chinese rule until it won its independence in 1921. It was then under a communist regime until 1990 when it went through a revolution and held parliamentary elections.

Mongolia is located in Northern Asia, between China and Russia. In land size, it is slightly smaller than Alaska, and more than twice the size of Texas. Mongolia is a semi-desert terrain with sparse grassy steppes and mountains in the west and southwest. The climate is a desert climate with large daily and seasonal temperature ranges. The Gobi Desert is located in south-central Mongolia. Nearly half of the population of Mongolia lives in the capital of Ulaanbaatar, and another large percentage live a nomadic lifestyle.
