Our recent visit to Pangasinan was a powerful reminder of the importance of community, connection, and support in our mission to reduce child malnutrition. This trip included rescreening children, training community coordinators, and conducting home visits to program recipients. Each step of the journey gave us valuable insight into the challenges faced by the families we serve and reaffirmed our commitment to making a lasting difference in their lives.
Rescreening and Community Engagement
Our rescreening session in Malimpec was an essential part of this visit. Over 20 children participated, and thanks to the dedicated work of local volunteers, the process went smoothly. Measuring height and weight can be challenging, especially with young children who might be anxious, but the volunteers demonstrated exceptional patience and commitment, ensuring each child was screened accurately. This event underscored the strength of community teamwork. It’s not just about numbers—it’s about the relationships and trust built along the way.Re-screening in Malimpec
Heartfelt Home Visits in Aguilar
One of the most memorable parts of our trip was visiting families in Aguilar, Pangasinan. These visits provided a closer look into the daily struggles and triumphs of the families we serve and allowed us to witness the direct impact of our program on their lives. One family we visited was the De Guzman family: Angelica (mother) and her children, RJ (10 years old), AJ (5 years old), and Andrei (3 years old). Angelica’s husband works as a farmer in the nearby rice fields. She shared how she first joined the program when she was pregnant with AJ. Since then, the support they’ve received from BCF has been invaluable.

A Story of Resilience and Hope: Sarah Jane and Rachel’s Journey
During our visit, we also had the privilege of meeting two sisters, Sarah Jane (8) and Rachel(4), whose story deeply touched us. Sarah Jane was once a recipient of our program when she was younger, and now her little sister, Rachel, is also part of the program.Sarah Jane and Rachel
Their family’s story is one of resilience as they navigate life with limited resources, relying heavily on the older siblings to care for the younger ones. Their mother works as a housemaid in town, leaving Sarah Jane and Rachel under the care of their older sisters, Rhia and Racquel. Despite their youth, Rhia and Racquel juggle school and household responsibilities while ensuring that Sarah Jane and Rachel are loved and cared for.

The challenges they face highlight the vulnerability of many children in our communities. Families like theirs depend on programs like ours to provide essential nutrition and support. Seeing the love and dedication shared between these siblings was both inspiring and deeply moving.

Training and Empowering Community Coordinators
Our visit also included a training session with the Pangasinan Community Coordinators in Calasiao. This session focused on BCF’s mission, vision, and the critical role of coordinators in supporting the success of our programs. Key topics discussed included accurate reporting, weekly MUAC measurements, and supporting families through referrals and deworming initiatives. The coordinators shared their passion for their work, as well as the challenges they face. Despite the emotional and physical toll, they continue to be inspired by the principle of charity, a reminder of the difference one person can make in the lives of many.BCF-P Community Coordinators and Hanna (Social Worker)
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on this trip, I am reminded of the remarkable dedication and resilience of the families and individuals we serve. The love and support I witnessed in Pangasinan are what make our work so meaningful and impactful. These experiences, whether through community training or home visits, will guide our efforts as we continue to fight child malnutrition and support families in need.Annica 2 years old
