Families at the Core of Child Health
Parents and caregivers are often the first to notice changes in their child’s growth, appetite, or behavior. Their role is crucial — not only in providing daily nourishment but also in taking small, proactive steps to prevent malnutrition. When families are aware, empowered, and supported, children are given the best chance to thrive.
Practical Ways Families Can Help Prevent Malnutrition
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding remains one of the most effective ways to give babies a healthy start. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary foods, provides essential nutrients and protects against disease.
Meal Planning
Even with limited resources, families can prepare affordable, balanced meals using local foods. Including staples like rice, vegetables, fish, and legumes helps ensure that children get the energy and nutrients they need to grow strong.
Kitchen and Backyard Gardening
Starting small home or backyard gardens allows families to grow vegetables and fruits right at home, making nutritious food more accessible and affordable.
Active Play
Encouraging children to engage in active play helps support healthy growth and strengthens their overall well-being. Playtime is not just fun, but also essential for a child’s physical and mental development.
Clean and Safe Water
Access to clean and safe drinking water is vital. Families can prevent malnutrition and disease by making sure children drink safe water and practice good hygiene habits.
Seeking Support
Families don’t have to do it alone. Partnering with health centers, volunteers, and community coordinators means children receive the care and attention they deserve. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
These practices are also recommended by health experts, including the Department of Health and the World Health Organization, as simple but effective ways families can protect their children from malnutrition.
Strength in Simple Actions
Maricris Pugoy’s family is a reminder of how consistent love and sacrifice can protect children’s health even in difficult times. Her husband, Mark Gil, works hard as a construction worker, while Maricris devotes her time to caring for their three children at home. With only enough income to cover their daily needs, providing extra nutrition for their youngest child, Dash Ann, was often a struggle.

Dash Ann stronger and healthier
For Maricris, the journey is not just about supplements or lessons, but about the reassurance that she is not alone in raising her children. Their story shows that even families with modest means can be powerful defenders of their children’s well-being when they work together and receive the right support.
Moving Forward Together
As we celebrate National Family Week, let us remember that families are not just the heart of society, but also the first line of defense against malnutrition. By working together, strengthening home practices, and supporting one another, we can create a future where every child grows up healthy, strong, and full of hope.
