Honoring the Heart of the Home

Every May, we take time to recognize the strength and sacrifices of mothers. At Bountiful Children’s Foundation – Philippines, we see these quiet heroes every day—mothers who carry the weight of daily life while fiercely fighting to keep their children healthy. Whether in rural barangays or urban communities, mothers are often the first to notice when something isn’t right and the first to act.

Mothers as Nutrition Champions

Through our Family MUAC (Mid-Upper Arm Circumference) Pilot Project, we’ve given mothers simple tools to assess their children’s health. Each week, they measure their child’s upper arm using a color-coded tape. This may seem like a small act, but it’s a crucial step in identifying malnutrition early and ensuring their child receives the right support.

We’ve seen how this can spark real change. For example, Lyrah Dawn Tora’s mother from our Jagna Program used the MUAC tape every week after her daughter was diagnosed with Severe Acute Malnutrition. She attended health lessons, applied what she learned, and stayed consistent. Over time, her dedication helped Lyrah improve from SAM to Moderate Acute Malnutrition. It’s a simple tool—but in the hands of a committed mother, it becomes a powerful lifeline.

The Strength Behind Small Steps

Being a mother means making tough decisions and showing up, even when progress is slow. The mothers we work with are more than caregivers—they’re partners, leaders, and advocates. They attend screenings, support trainings, help distribute food supplements, and encourage others to stay involved.

Take Aedan Zion’s mother from our Aklan Program, for example. When her child showed no immediate improvements, she could have given up. But she stayed committed—measuring, learning, and working closely with her coordinator. Her quiet persistence, even during difficult weeks, led to real progress. Today, Aedan is stronger and healthier, all because his mother refused to give up.

Caregiving that Goes Beyond

Nutrition is just one part of raising a healthy child. Mothers also take on the physical and emotional demands of caregiving—monitoring symptoms, preparing meals with limited resources, and comforting children during sickness. These tasks are often unseen but are essential to every child’s recovery and well-being.

John Tyler’s mother from our Malasiqui Program is one such example. After her son was diagnosed with Primary Tuberculosis, she made the difficult choice to leave her job so she could care for him full-time. This decision came with financial strain, but she knew that being present for his treatment and daily needs was the most important thing she could do. Her dedication made all the difference. Today, John Tyler is showing signs of improvement, thanks to her care and sacrifice.
