Communities of Patzicía, Chimaltenango
I recently visited the communities of Patzicía, Chimaltenango, located on the slopes of the majestic Acatenango volcano. There, where the roads are long and steep and the weather can change without warning, live women whose strength is not always visible, but is felt in every step they take.
They are mothers who walk for miles carrying their children in their arms or on their backs, crossing dirt paths, steep slopes, and exhausting days with a single purpose: to protect the health and future of their children.
Walking out of love, not obligation
For many of these mothers, attending Bountiful’s nutritional follow-up is no easy task. It involves getting up before dawn, organizing their homes, preparing what little they have, and embarking on a journey that can last for hours. They have no transportation and no easy routes. Even so, they walk.
They do not do it out of obligation; they do it out of love. They know that every effort represents an opportunity for their children to grow up healthy, strong, and with a future different from the one they themselves have known. With every step, they carry the hope that their children will not repeat stories marked by malnutrition, illness, or lack of opportunity.
The sacrifice that comes from love
In these communities, motherhood is deeply intertwined with sacrifice. Mothers know well the weight of physical exhaustion, but also the weight of responsibility and hope. Every walk is a conscious decision to care, to prevent harm, and to refuse to give in to difficulty.
“Sometimes it’s tiring to walk so much, but I do it because I want my son to be healthy and able to go to school without getting sick,” one mother shared, adjusting the shawl holding her little one.
For them, nutrition is much more than food. It is the possibility for their children to study without hunger, learn with energy, and develop without the limitations they themselves once faced. They are mothers who dream of seeing their children flourish, grow, and go further.
When nutrition becomes hope
Despite economic hardship and limited resources, these women strive every day to give their children the best. Their love is reflected in every sacrifice, every walk, and every nutritional follow-up visit. They do not want their children to endure the same hardships they have faced.
In the Kaqchikel Maya worldview, life is sacred, and a child’s growth is a blessing that must be nurtured with responsibility and respect. As a principle deeply rooted in the community expresses:
“Ri ak’al k’o chi k’utun, k’o chi chajixik.”
“A child must be cared for and protected.”
This phrase encapsulates the collective responsibility to nurture life from its earliest years. For these mothers, caring for their children is not just a daily task, but an act of love, respect for life, and commitment to the balance and well-being of their families and communities. Every step they take honors this ancestral principle of caring for the seed that will one day bear fruit.
Accompany, not just assist
At Bountiful, we believe that true change happens when we walk alongside families. Nutritional monitoring, ongoing care, and respectful support ensure that these mothers are not alone in their daily efforts.
Every check-up, every supplement, and every piece of guidance strengthens their commitment, protects their children’s development, and builds confidence. When a mother receives support, it is not only her child’s health that improves—the entire family is strengthened, and hope is planted within the community.
One step at a time toward a better future
Every walk, every sacrifice, and every smile upon arriving at the program reminds us that real change begins with small acts of love. When we nurture a child, we transform their present and open doors to their future.
✨ Walking miles today can mean a life full of opportunities tomorrow.
We invite you to walk alongside these families as we continue supporting mothers and children through nutrition, follow-up care, and long-term accompaniment. Building healthier futures in Guatemala.
Together, we can make every step count.
