April brings some of the hottest days of the year in the Philippines. For many families, this means adjusting daily routines to keep children safe and healthy. In the communities we serve, the effects of the heat go beyond discomfort. It can affect a child’s appetite, hydration, and overall health.
During this season, maintaining consistent care becomes even more important. Small, everyday actions can help children stay healthy and continue their progress.

Understanding the Impact of Heat on Children
High temperatures can influence a child’s health in several ways. Some children may eat less due to reduced appetite, while others may be at greater risk of dehydration. For children who are already at risk of malnutrition, even small changes can affect their growth and recovery.
Because of this, regular monitoring and timely support remain essential during the summer months.

The Importance of Continuous Nutrition Support
Despite the challenges brought by the heat, nutrition support should remain steady. Monthly distributions, regular monitoring, and timely follow-ups help ensure that children continue to receive what they need.
When support is interrupted, progress can slow down. This is especially true for children recovering from malnutrition. On the other hand, when care is sustained, even small improvements can be maintained over time.

Supporting Children at Home
Families play a key role in helping children stay healthy during this season. Simple practices at home can make a meaningful difference:
- Encouraging children to eat regularly, even in small portions
- Making sure children stay hydrated throughout the day
- Continuing recommended feeding practices
- Staying connected with community coordinators for guidance
- Encouraging children to engage in simple learning and play activities at home
- Limiting screen time and encouraging more active play and interaction

These practices are consistent with general guidance from health authorities such as the Department of Health.
While the summer season brings added challenges, it also highlights the importance of consistent care throughout a child’s development. The impact of proper nutrition, regular monitoring, and guidance becomes more evident over time, especially when families remain committed despite changing conditions.
One example of this is the story of Gian Matthew Amen.
A Story of Steady Growth
Gian Matthew Amen’s story began even before he was born.
While still pregnant, his mother, Lendie Opero, became a member of BCFP. At that time, she wanted to support her child’s health from the very beginning. Through the program, she received supplements such as peanut butter, Alaska milk, Cerelac, and MNP, which supported both her and her baby during pregnancy.

Along with this, she gained practical knowledge. She regularly attended health lessons where she learned about newborn care, proper nutrition, and ways to support her child’s growth. She applied these lessons consistently as Gian grew.

Over time, Gian became active, curious, and full of energy. He rarely got sick and showed an early interest in learning. His mother continued to guide him using the knowledge she gained through the program.
Gian recently reached an important milestone. He graduated from kindergarten with honors.

Working Together for Child Health
The combined efforts of families, volunteers, and community coordinators make it possible to continue supporting children, even during difficult conditions. Regular communication and coordination allow communities to respond quickly to the needs of children.
These shared efforts help ensure that no child is left behind, even during seasons when maintaining health becomes more challenging.

Moving Forward Together
As the summer season continues, maintaining consistent care and nutrition remains essential. By staying committed to simple daily practices and working together, families and communities can help children remain healthy and on track in their growth.
Even during the hottest months, these small daily efforts can make a lasting difference in a child’s well-being.
