When growing up becomes a silent challenge.
In many communities in Guatemala, chronic malnutrition remains one of the most pressing challenges for children; the beginning of life does not always offer the same opportunities for all children. Nearly one in two children under five years old lives with this condition, one of the highest rates in Latin America.

In the department of San Marcos, thousands of children face the effects of malnutrition from their earliest years. What should be a stage of growth, learning, and discovery can be limited by the lack of essential nutrients that the body and brain need to develop fully.
The first thousand days, which change a whole life.
Nutrition specialists agree on one fundamental point: the first thousand days of life are crucial. This period, which begins during pregnancy and continues until the child is two years old, is the most important stage for the development of the body and brain.
When a child receives proper nutrition during this time, their body can develop more strongly. Their immune system becomes more resilient, and their brain builds the necessary foundation for learning.
But when nutrition is insufficient during this critical stage, the consequences can be long-lasting. For this reason, a baby's well-being begins long before birth. It begins with the mother's health and nutrition.
Chronic malnutrition is not always immediately visible. Many children continue to play, attend school, and participate in community life. However, their bodies grow more slowly, and their development may be impaired.
Mothers on the front line against malnutrition.
In many communities of Tecún Umán, mothers are the ones who sustain the first effort to protect the lives of their children; they care for, feed, work, and organize the home while facing economic limitations, long working hours, and reduced access to health care. Even so, many mothers continue to do the most important thing for their babies: breastfeed.

Breastfeeding is one of the most powerful tools for preventing illness and protecting infant development. Breast milk contains essential nutrients, antibodies, and protective factors that strengthen the baby's immune system. In addition to providing nourishment, breastfeeding also builds bonding, security, and emotional closeness. Every time a mother breastfeeds, she is strengthening her child's present and protecting their future development.
The mother's nutrition is also important.

To sustain breastfeeding and care for their children, mothers also need to nourish themselves; however, in communities where resources are limited, many women face difficulties in maintaining sufficient nutrition during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Maternal nutrition is a key element in the fight against childhood malnutrition. When a mother receives adequate nutrition, her body has more energy, her health improves, and she can continue to care for and feed her child more effectively. In this context, fortified foods like Incaparina become an important support. This nutritious blend provides essential proteins, iron, and vitamins that help strengthen the mother's body during breastfeeding.
Simple support can make a profound difference: more energy for the mother, better nutrition for the baby, more opportunities for the future.
Bountiful's support that strengthens communities.
Information, support, and education can transform how families face the challenges of malnutrition. Through Bountiful Children Foundation Guatemala, many mothers in vulnerable communities receive support during pregnancy and their children's early years.

This support includes:
- Education on breastfeeding.
- Support for pregnant women.
- Nutritional assessment.
- Nutritional guidance.
- Early childhood development.
- Community monitoring.
- Support with nutritional supplement, Incaparina.
- Child protection.
When a mother receives guidance and support, her confidence grows in caring for her baby's health and making decisions that strengthen their development. This transformation doesn't happen overnight, but it happens step by step.
Investing today in the future of a generation.
The fight against chronic malnutrition is not solved solely with food; it is built through education, support, adequate nutrition, and constant assistance to families. Every mother who receives support has more tools to protect the health of her children.
Every child who grows up well-nourished has more opportunities to learn, develop, and contribute to their communities in the future. That's why empowering mothers also means empowering the future of an entire generation.
