Child Wasting: 45.4 million

Wasting in children is the life-threatening result of poor nutrient intake and/or disease. Children suffering from wasting have weakened  immunity, are susceptible to long-term developmental delays and face an increased risk of death, particularly when wasting is severe.  These children require urgent treatment and care to survive. In 2020, 45.4 million children under 5 were affected by wasting, of which 13.6 million were severely wasted.

Tania Bocanegra

Community Coordinator

I am a housewife. I was born in the province of Moyobamba in the jungle of Peru. I was educated at the Colegio Emblematico Serafin Filomeno until 1991 where I met my husband Francisco Vasquez Chumbe. We have 4 beautiful children: Anthony, Fransisco, Tania, and Claudia. In November 2013, we received lessons from 2 elders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We gave our son permission to be baptized in the church since they were catholics. But after 4 months, we were able to see the faith of our little son and decided to be baptized in March 2014. At that time there were the missionaries Elder Lee and Elder Yano, both North Americans. Once we were baptized, our goal was to be sealed for eternity in the holy temple. In August 2015, we traveled to the city of Trujillo to perform the ordinance of eternal marriage in the Holy Temple of Trujillo Peru. A month later, my son Antony left for a 2-year mission in Chile-Rancagua. When he was on his mission for 7 months, my husband and his Dad died. I didn’t forget the promises I received in the temple and have stayed active these 6 years since the death of my beloved husband. I have been helping Bountiful since 2018. I am glad to help children who are afflicted with malnutrition to this day.

Bountiful's Community Coordinators

Community coordinators serve with Bountiful as volunteers. They organize other local volunteers and together conduct screenings, train families, distribute locally-purchased nutritional supplements, and follow up on infant development.
