Preventing Malnutrition

Although malnutrition can manifest in multiple ways, the path to prevention is virtually identical: adequate maternal nutrition before and during pregnancy and while breastfeeding; optimal breastfeeding in the first two years of life; nutritious, diverse and safe foods in early childhood; and a healthy environment, including access to basic health, water, hygiene and sanitation services and opportunities for safe physical activity.

Rhonda Ruiz Torrez

Community Coordinator

I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 42 years. I am very grateful to the Lord for the many callings that I had and have. I was a regular missionary on Peru Lima South Mission fulfilling an honorable mission of 18 months. We opened several places with the help of coordinators and the BYU professors…Magna Lily, Rhonda, Tarapoto, Nueva Cajamarca, Yurimaguas and San Martín. We also open three border cities in Peru and Colombia.

I was in charge of the Northeast region and went to Ecuador and had a beautiful meeting in a very special place with brothers from the church. They went to the chapel with beautiful costumes…the men with their braids and hats and the sisters with beautiful hand-embroidered blouses. For me it is a great blessing to help the Foundation so that the babies who are most in need receive help. The children have this great help in their nutrition.

I studied with the BYU Pathway program virtually and was studying Business Administration in English. I ended up at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon. I would like to get to know the historical places of the Church because I am a seminary supervisor. I am also a self-sufficiency employment missionary and help the brothers of my stake find employment. I would like to visit Italy, which is where my great-great-grandfather Secondo came, and go by train to get to know Europe. I also want to go to Israel and visit Holy places where the Lord walks. I would like to open more places in various parts of the world where people need help from the Bountiful Foundation.

I thank our Heavenly Father for the health, life, and strength that he always gives me. I love this opportunity to serve the weakest of the beloved children of the church and non-members also. I look forward to them growing healthy and beautiful. I love my God, my beloved parents, my family, and the children very much.

Bountiful's Community Coordinators

Community coordinators serve with Bountiful as volunteers. They organize other local volunteers and together conduct screenings, train families, distribute locally-purchased nutritional supplements, and follow up on infant development.
