    • Boys decreased from 35.9 in 2000 to 14.6 in 2019
    • Girls decreased from 29.5 in 2000 to 11.9 in 2019
  • Malnutrition in children under 5 years of age:
    • Stunting decreased from 24.6% in 2003 to 13.6% in 2014
    • Wasting increased from 1.3% in 2003 to 2.1% in 2014

El Salvador - History and Demographics

The Cuzcatlecs, Lenca and Maya were the first settlers in El Salvador. In the early 16th century, the Spanish Empire conquered the territory. In 1821, El Salvador achieved independence from Spain. El Salvador has chronic political and economic instability with coups, revolts, and a succession of authoritarian rulers in the 20th century. In 1992 after a civil war, a constitutional republic was formed which remains today. Government corruption has adversly affected the economy of El Salvador in the 21st century.

Bountiful's Mission

Our mission is to provide nutritional supplementation to pregnant and nursing mothers and malnourished children for the first one thousand days of life, and teach health and cognitive development skills to families in the areas we serve.
